Firstly, let me apologise for not updating you all for the last few weeks.

Plenty has happened in the time since we last spoke. We’ve moved hospital, there’s been an arrest, Christmas & New Year have been and gone and now we’re planning on celebrating Nick’s birthday on Wednesday.

So, let’s start at the start…

Nick moved to Stoke Mandeville specialist rehab centre in Aylesbury on December 20th. Frustratingly close to Christmas but we’d waited so long for a bed, we weren’t about to turn it down now. Everything Nick had known for 7 weeks was now thrown out the window and he had to start from scratch. New environment, new nurses, new routine, same problems.

First off, the specially made wheelchair that was flown in from Sweden, especially for Nick, stayed behind. Queen’s had paid for it, so we couldn’t take it. No problem said Stoke Mandeville because they have loads of chairs there (we asked them to re-confirm this 100 times, knowing the problems we had finding a chair to fit Nick’s 6ft8 frame).

Needless to say Nick didn’t get a chair that fits him until the 28th December. Yes, you guessed it already! That meant Nick wasent out of bed on Christmas Day. We had built our hopes up of sitting down together as a family and eating Christmas dinner. The local pub had done us proud, with a big platter of turkey with all the trimmings. But it wasen’t to be and it was a real shame for Nick and Mum especially. But the most important thing was that we were all together and we all opened our presents with the kids around Nick’s bed.

It’s now the 8th Jan and Nick still hasn’t been in his chair yet. Unfortunately, he’s had a few slight set-backs which have meant he’s not been well enough to be sitting up. This has also meant that he hasn’t started any rehab yet. Fingers crossed that he’ll be able to get going tomorrow.

Just before Christmas the police made an arrest, which was welcome news to us all. We’ve been really pleased with the way they have managed the case and kept us in the loop in recent weeks. Thanks to everyone that has put in the hours.

It’s Nick’s birthday on Wednesday and I’d just like to say Happy Birthday to my little bro!! I’m so proud of you and what you’re doing. We can all do this together and we’ll get there mate.

I’ll let you know all about in next week.

16 Dec

You wait 6 weeks for a bed and 2 come along at once.

The bed for Nick at Stoke Mandeville on 23rd December is now 100% confirmed.

But, we’ve now also got a bed confirmed at Stanmore for the 20th December!

Decisions, decisions….

We’ll have to have a real good look into which hospital is going to be able to give Nick the very best treatment.
Stoke Mandeville is 1hr30 from Romford in Aylesbury, Bucks and Stanmore is near Wembley in North London about 45mins away.

They’re both supposed to have excellent specialist spinal units, but we need the right one for Nick!

Watch this space…

12 Dec

Hi everyone,

A bad week has ended on a real high…

Nick has been in quite a bit of pain over the past 7 days with problems with his bowels. He has also been experiencing pain and discomfort in his shoulders.

It turns out that his shoulders are slightly dislocated and they are massaging them now to ease them back into place.

So, as you can imagine it has been a really tough week for Nick.

He has been really looking forward to Christmas, as the matron at Queen’s has agreed to let him out of the hospital for a few hours to be with us all.

But…….we have found out today that a bed will become available for Nick at Stoke Mandeville’s specialist spinal rehab centre!! Absolutely amazing news that we have all been so desperately waiting for. And yes, you’ve guessed it – the bed will be ready for him on the 23rd December….2 days before Christmas!!

Obviously we can’t turn the opportunity down, as we’ve waited over 6 weeks for this moment. So, we’ll have to see how Christmas will now pan out for Nick and the family.

7 Dec

Hi all,

I’m gonna start with the good news and end with the brilliant news. Try not to cheat and skip to the end!

The good news is that the Benefit Night on Friday was an amazing success. We raised a substantial amount of money for Nick and the support shown was astounding! We had people queuing to get in and the place was packed to the rafters and rocking all night. The auction raised some unbelievable numbers with the kind of generosity that staggers belief.

The amount of auction items and raffle prizes that were donated is just ridiculous. What a wonderful group of people. Nick is one lucky fella to have such a strong support network of friends and family.

As Nick mentioned in his speech, a huge thank you to Seamus O’Grady and his staff for putting on the night at such short notice. Plus, another huge thank you to everyone that contributed before, during and after.

We have some more fundraising plans in the pipeline. Seamus is teaming up with Ford’s to get Nick a brand new car, which we will be selling raffle tickets for. The winning ticket will be drawn in O’Grady’s on Paddy’s Day on Saturday 17th March. We’ll drive the car around on a trailer to various venue’s selling tickets all the way. We’re hoping this will raise another big lump sum for Nick.

Now the bit you’ve been waiting for….

Nick’s new chair arrived from Sweden yesterday and its a big old bit of kit. He say’s it’s so much more comfortable and Nick was able to sit in it for 3 hours straight off the bat.

When he got back into his bed at 6pm, we did a bit of physio with him. We went through the regular routine of manouvering his arms and legs, while doing some strength exercises to keep his limbs from seizing up. We felt good progress there in the strength he was able to exert.

Then came the brilliant bit. We picked up his hands to manipulate his wrists and fingers to stop them going stiff. All of a sudden his index finger twitched. Then again, this time stronger. Then his thumb went, with even more of a movement. Then all four fingers went together! Mum was like a woman possessed, she was out of the room like a shot bringing the nurses, kitchen staff and cleaners in to see what Nick was now doing. Anyone that was in the vicinity was dragged in haha. An amazing moment for everyone!

Well done Nick – we are all so proud of you!! Keep up the good work, stay strong and your sheer determination will see you through!

Ben x
